The main difference between an electromagnetic pen (EM pen) and a capacitive pen lies in the underlying technology used for their operation.

An electromagnetic pen, also known as an EM pen, utilizes electromagnetic induction technology. It requires a digitizer or an active tablet/screen with built-in sensors to detect the pen's position and movement. The pen emits an electromagnetic field, and the digitizer or tablet/screen uses this field to calculate the pen's precise location. EM pens typically offer high precision, pressure sensitivity, and accuracy, making them suitable for professional digital art and design.

A capacitive pen relies on capacitive touch technology. It works by exploiting the conductive properties of the user's hand or a conductive stylus to interact with the capacitive touch screen. The touch screen senses changes in the electrical charge when the pen or user's hand comes into contact with it. Capacitive pens are commonly used with touchscreen devices such as smartphones and tablets. They are generally less precise and don't offer pressure sensitivity compared to EM pens.
